Dedicated to Tracking Down the Best-Liked SAYINGS Ever... with your critical input

With hundreds of thousands of websites devoted to millions of "favorite" quotations, it's obviously impossible to find the "BEST EVER," right? Everybody has a different opinion and we are all affected in different ways. A quote that strikes one person as deeply profound can cause somebody else to say, "Who cares?" So I might as well give up on this wild idea...

"Don't undertake a project unless it is manifestly important and nearly impossible."
-- Edwin H. Land, Inventor of the Instant Polaroid Land Camera

All right then, let's undertake this project... and to check out a great collection of terrific, entertaining quotes, sayings, amazing facts, and lots more, go to QuotableToiletPaper.com.

Please Vote-For or Add-To the Sayings in the Lists Below. Thanks a bunch!

Defining Our Terms

How is a "Saying" different from a "Quotation?"

According to dictionary.reference.com," a SAYING is "something said, esp. a proverb or apothegm." Synonyms are "maxim, adage, saw, aphorism." Wait, I never heard of "apothegm" before, either... What the heck is that?

According to "dictionary.reference.com," an APOTHEGM is "a short, pithy, instructive saying; a terse remark or aphorism." Also, apophthegm. Okay, I just learned an irrelevant new word...

And a QUOTATION, on the other hand, is "something that is quoted; a passage quoted from a book, speech, etc.: a speech full of quotations from Lincoln's letters." I get the point, but I am less than impressed that "dictionary.com" actually used the words "quotations" and "quotes" while defining "QUOTATION"... but let's move on.

For our purposes, let's say a QUOTATION is a statement attributed to a specific writer ("Life is not a spectacle or a feast; it is a predicament." -- George Santayana), and a SAYING is an unattributed statement (Those who forget this sentence are condemned to reread it).

YOU are Cordially Invited to Participate!

Please jump in with your votes and feel free to submit your own ideas. Eventually, the "BEST" will rise to the top and the "Less than Best" will drop down.
